This turned my Sunday scaries around
I used to cry every Sunday when I had to go to bed because I hated my job so much. Yes, I’m quick to cry but this was different.
This wasn’t the crying releasing an emotion; it was the dread of going back to work on Monday… a classic case of the Sunday Scaries.
At this time, I had just moved to Boston and was working in a new job. My boss had very strict rules about scheduling, time off and how he treated his team. It was not aligned with my values and it wore me down every single day. Unfortunately, I felt paralyzed because I had just moved there and needed work.
At this time, it got so bad, my (now) husband even offered that I should quit my job every single day because my anxiety and dread was impeding his happiness, too. He believed my mental health was more important than any job I had that made me feel less than.
Why am I telling you this?
I want you to know that whatever situation you are in this weekend, Sunday doesn't have to be scary.
I decided to change my situation outside of work:
I made plans on Friday evening to look forward to seeing friends and not being distracted by work as I headed into the weekend.
I wrote down my accomplishments for the week ( ← btw, this becomes very helpful during review time, but that’s a lesson for another time)
I planned something to look forward to on Sunday evening, like dinner and a move or a nice luxurious bath so that I wouldn’t be only thinking about the week ahead.
I started buying myself flowers every Saturday to liven up the house and add beauty.
I started realizing (with the support of my newly-hired life coach) that the situation I was in then wasn’t set in stone. That I could decide to make a change at any moment.
Eventually, after I started putting these plans in place and finding my self-esteem rise, I was able to apply for another job internally and got a brand new boss who was amazing. She was an incredible mentor and had my interest in mind. She helped to lift me up and eventually I was promoted several times to manager.
What will you do today to prepare yourself to make Sundays not-so-scary anymore?
Rooting for ya!
Nic
