Resumes are the burpees of the job search.

When the pandemic started, I was six months postpartum and nowhere ready for intense workouts.

So how did I find myself taking The Class in the middle of March 2020?

(If you’ve been with me for a while, you’ll know that The Class is an hour long class with a series of cardio and calisthenic exercises, and about 5-7 minutes of straight up burpees.)

When I first started, I laughed when it was burpee time and decided to take the modification instead: a low squat.

Several weeks passed and I continued working out with my favorite teacher, Natalie, about 3-4 times a week. I could feel my body getting stronger.

Then all of a sudden one day, without any effort, it happened!

I did a full song of burpees.

I couldn't believe that doing 40+ burpees felt so easy!

And I’m guessing “easy” is how you’ve wanted to feel while writing your resume?

Well, I have some news for you…

Resumes are not easy.

They, like burpees, are easy when you lay the groundwork beforehand which sadly, most people skip.

And you know that when you skip the groundwork with burpees you get hella injured, right?

Maybe this is how you actually feel about your resume writing…

You start writing your resume, get overwhelmed, and stop after five minutes.

You don’t know what to write so you just write everything that comes to mind and cross your fingers.

You think you’re not good enough to get a new job because you can’t even do something as “simple” as write a resume.

You believe your whole job search depends on how good your resume is.

You worry about your resume more than you actually do anything about it.

You worry about your lack of education or experience whenever you try to start.

You become impatient and just send out as many resumes as possible and cross your fingers.

You eventually think you’re not good enough and figure it’s best to just stay at your job because the whole thing is too hard. And honestly, you’re just lucky to have a job right now.

However, if you think about it, resumes are just one piece of the job search process but we make them feel like the most important.

This is why inside of my private coaching, we take a zoomed-out, holistic view of your goals and create your personalized strategy from there.

Because this whole job search thing is a lot more complicated than just “throwing a resume together today” if you want to stop settling and actually get a job that you want.

And now that you know that, can you give yourself a little compassion today around wherever you are in a career transition (especially if you’ve been stressing over a resume)?

What changes do you want to make now that you know this? Message me and let me know.

Love & burpees,

—Nic
